The brand's story began already in 1888 when the brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth founded a machinery and spare parts factory in Grenchen, Switzerland. In 1906, the factory began producing complete watches under the name Grana, and in 1939, the factory's watches also began to be sold under the name Certina, which became the sole name of the watch brand within ten years. The name Certina is based on the Latin word certus, which means certainty.

The significant Certina DS watch concept

Throughout its history, Certina has developed several innovations, the most significant of which can be considered the DS (Double Security) concept. DS protection means shock-protected mechanism, shock resistance and water resistance up to 200 meters. The mechanisms of Certina watches manufactured according to the DS concept are protected by an extra-strong shell and gaskets. In addition, the watches have a very durable sapphire crystal. With this innovation, Certina set the standards for a new generation of high-quality wristwatches.

Many of Certina's quartz-powered watches, i.e. battery-powered ones, use Precidrive™ technology, which practically means that this type of watch is 8-10 times more accurate than a conventional battery-powered watch.

Certina, which has operated under the Swatch Group since 1983, today manufactures both automatic and battery-operated wristwatches, which are widely known around the world for their high quality and durability. The watches use ETA mechanisms from the brand's parent company, Swatch Group.
